The licence under the Atomic Energy Act for the storage of nuclear fuels in the Grafenrheinfeld interim storage facility expires 40 years after emplacement of the first cask. This means that CASTOR casks only need to be moved a short distance from the reactor building to the interim storage facility and that no public roads need to be used. The entire site is protected by a security perimeter fence.<\/p>\n<p>The site houses two storage areas with a capacity of 88 spaces: Storage area 1 has a surface area of 670 m\u00b2 for 40 spaces; storage area 2 covers 760 m\u00b2 for 48 spaces.
